St Lucia named in top 10 most dangerous cruise destinations
A popular cruise travel blogger has named St Lucia as one of the top 10 most dangerous locations in the world for cruise travellers.
In a video entitled 2019 The 10 Most Dangerous Cruise Ports For Cruise Ship Passengers, which has been seen more than 800,000 times already, the YouTube blog channel ‘Travelling with Bruce’ named St Lucia as the tenth more dangerous port for cruise travellers and likened the island to a third world country.
St Lucia was named alongside other Caribbean destinations St Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Nassau in the Bahamas in a list of ports which pose the highest risk to its visitors. The video notes the armed robberies and violent attacks occur on a regular basis just a couple of blocks from where passengers land.
In January this year, two German cruise travellers were attacked in an attempted robbery while leaving a park near the port in Castries. 55 cruise holiday makers and two crew members were robbed at gunpoint in 2013 while on a cruise-sponsored excursion.
What is made clear in this video is that things need to change if cruise ships are to continue visiting these areas. It mentions how several companies are investing millions in building their own island resorts to avoid the risks of places such as St Lucia.
The long-term effect of such a move for the tourism of all these countries would be catastrophic. Surely this is a call for St Lucia to improve its criminal justice system and, by doing so, the long-term sustainability of its tourist sector?

In the video, Bruce says: “The number 10 most dangerous port for cruise travellers, believe it or not, is St Lucia. Beautiful place, gorgeous island, but man if you walk off the beaten path you are in trouble. People are getting mugged in daylight by armed robbers with guns. It is not good, it is a third world scenario just a couple of blocks away from where the cruise ship docks.”
